"Near the slopes" is the most abused phrase in mountain rentals. A listing fifteen minutes' drive from a lift will happily use it. So the homes on this page qualify on distance: each one's coordinates are within 1.6 km — about a mile — of Bear Mountain. Nothing gets in on the strength of its name.
A mile is the threshold because it is roughly the distance people will actually walk carrying gear. Inside it, you can leave the car at the cabin on a powder morning instead of joining the queue for resort parking, and come back mid-afternoon without it costing you the rest of the day. Outside it, you are driving — and on a Saturday in February, driving is the part of the day you will remember.
Big Bear's two resorts are under three miles apart and share a lift ticket, so a cabin near Bear Mountain puts both within easy reach. Bear Mountain is the one with the terrain parks and the jump lines; Snow Summit is generally the better bet for groups with beginners and for the long cruising runs. Most visitors ski both on a multi-day trip and treat the free shuttle between them as part of the deal.
Worth being straight about the asymmetry, since our portfolio has it: at the same one-mile bar, 15 of our homes are close to Bear Mountain and effectively none are that close to Snow Summit. If Snow Summit specifically is what you want to walk to, we are not the right fit, and we would rather say so here than after you have booked.
To be unambiguous about a phrase the industry abuses: none of these homes is genuinely ski-in/ski-out. They are near Bear Mountain, not within the resort — you walk or drive to the base area, you do not click out of your bindings at the door. If you want true slopeside access, that is a different product and we do not have it.
Some of these properties have a garage, which in February is worth more than it sounds. We do not provide ski or snowboard equipment, and we do not supply tyre chains — when it is snowing, chains may be required on the mountain roads, so check conditions before you set off and carry your own. Caltrans posts requirements for the routes up, and they change quickly.
These cabins are not only a winter proposition. Bear Mountain's slopes become the trailheads and the golf course in summer, the zoo is nearby, and the lake is a short drive down the hill. 8 of these 15 homes have a private hot tub and 15 have a fireplace; 4 take dogs. They run 2 to 6 bedrooms and sleep up to 16.
